Dart makes first start with Giants to close rookie preseason

New York Giants first-round quarterback Jaxson Dart played his last preseason game as a rookie, Thursday night. The former record-breaking Ole Miss signal-caller started for the Giants as they hosted the New England Patriots in their preseason finale.

Dart played in just the opening quarter and flashed once again, completing six-of-twelve passes for 81 yards and a seven-yard touchdown pass. His 23-yard run was the longest recorded from either team on the night.

However, Dart was forced to miss the end of his fourth drive of the game due to a hit taken while scrambling downfield. He exited the game and entered the medical tent on the sideline as he was briefly evaluated for a concussion.

The former Ole Miss quarterback closed his rookie preseason completing 68 percent of his passes for 372 passing yards to go along with three touchdown passes. On the ground, he recorded 52 rushing yards on six carries and added another score in three games played.

Though Dart's preseason shows clear glimpses of the future under center in New York, his status as the team's backup heading into the season isn't going to change.

"(Russell Wilson) is our starter and we're going to keep developing Jaxson," Giants head coach Brian Daboll said last week, via Giants.com. "Jaxson's just got to continue to work to get better, and we've got to help him get better. . . . What we're trying to do is help Jaxson be the best quarterback he can be. Just like all the quarterbacks. Just like every player on the team."

Dart's standout preseason has been among the league's major talking points this month and has made him an early fan favorite. If things go south for the Giants during the 2025 regular season, it won't take long for Dart to see the field as a rookie.
