Mike Vrabel preaching a famous 3-word Belichick mantra, and it’s not ‘Do your job’

Since the departure of Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots have done a lot of work to scrub away the old coach’s famous phrases and mantras.

But there’s apparently one Belichick-ism that’s stuck around – and Mike Vrabel is instilling one of them into quarterback Drake Maye.

Maye, who was interviewed on the sidelines of Thursday night’s preseason finale, was asked what kind of leadership the Patriots are looking for this year. Maye said Vrabel has been drilling his with a three-word mantra that was famous during Belichick’s era.

But it wasn’t “Do your job.” It was, “No days off.”

“‘There’s no days off,’ is what he said,” Maye said. “Playing this position, playing this spot in the league, there’s no days off and I think that’s something I’m trying to buy into fully. As the quarterback, I think they’re looking at me to pump guys up, get on them when I need to.”

The phrase became a Belichick-ism in January 2017 when the Patriots were celebrating their win in Super Bowl LI. After the duck boat parade, Belichick chanted “No! Days! Off!” to the crowd gathered outside Boston City Hall.

The irony, of course, is that countless fans in attendance had in fact taken the day off to attend the parade. But for the Patriots, the wisdom still stands.
