Former England captain Wayne Rooney has said that the Newcastle United players may not welcome Alexander Isak back into the fold should he not leave the club this summer.

The striker is currently training away from the first team amid speculation over his future. He released a statement this week where he spoke about ‘broken promises’, it prompted a response from Newcastle themselves.

Newcastle turned down a £110 million bid from Liverpool earlier in the window. It just happens that the two teams meet in the Premier League on Monday night.

As well as the situation surrounding Isak, Newcastle are also involved in a saga around Brentford forward Yoane Wissa. The Magpies have made bids for the DR Congo international that have been turned down.

Like Isak, Wissa is yet to feature for Brentford this season. The player has also deleted any association with the Bees from his social media accounts.

Giving his thoughts on the situations of both players, Rooney outlined how he would react if he was one of the teammates of the players pushing for a move.

"If I'm a Newcastle player I don't want him [Isak] back," he said on BBC Sport’s Wayne Rooney show.

"I think player leave football clubs, and that happens all the time but there's a way to go about it and you can't go on strike. He's deserted you and he doesn't want to be there. He doesn't want to be your teammate.

"Newcastle are not happy with Isak's behaviour because Liverpool want to sign him, but then on the flipside of that, Newcastle are trying to sign Wissa, who's behaving in the exact same way. "

He later added: “I think Wissa is in a worse position than what Isak is. At least there’s a bit of clarity on it, but for Wissa to just unfollow the club and take all your pictures down of a club who have helped you progress as a player, and again, if he wants to leave, I don’t think anyone would have a problem with that if it’s done the right way.

“But they’re very badly advised of what they’re doing because, agents have influence, a lot of people have their father or their brother as their agents now and sometimes the right thing or the right decision is not always from the player’s point of view.”
