”Free swing for Arsenal” – Paul Merson predicts result of Leeds United game

Leeds United went into Monday night’s game as the underdogs in their Premier League opener. Many doubted that lightning would strike twice after newly promoted Sunderland also won their opener.

The Elland Road crowd made it count to create a loud atmosphere for the home side. Leeds flew off the blocks and dominated most of the proceedings during the 90 minutes. The home side were unlucky to not have scored more goals because of poor finishing. In the end, it took a late penalty from Lukas Nmecha to seal all three points.

After the game the major talking point was about the controversy surrounding the penalty decision, with most crediting Leeds’ win to poor refereeing. Daniel Farke’s men will have a chance to prove them wrong this weekend against Arsenal.

Ahead of the game, many pundits have had their say. Arsenal seem to be the overwhelming favourites and are expected to rack up the goals on Saturday. Paul Merson believes the same, saying the match is basically a ”free swing” for the Gunners.

“This is a good game for Arsenal to begin their league campaign at home. It’s even better because Leeds just won, they will feel more confident and may go have a free swing at this game,” Merson said.

“If Leeds try to play football at the Emirates, the game will open up for Arsenal’s quality to shine through. If Leeds had lost to Everton, they would have opted to sit back. Now this is more like a free-hit to them.”

Daniel Farke is adamant that his side will not back down

In Friday’s press conference, Daniel Farke said his team will continue to play the football they know. Leeds shocked Everton with their intensity and physicality and the German expects more of the same when Saturday comes around:

”I don’t want to speak too much in advance about it because I’m pretty sure our next opponent a bit what I say in public, but again we won’t sell out DNA in this PL season. It’s not like we will try to park the bus and try to put the ball in the stands.

”We will try to have as many periods as possible where we control the game.”
