Report: Everton plot £26m move for one of Leeds United's latest transfer targets after opening day defeat

Leeds United got off to a winning start to their 2025/26 Premier League season on Monday, beating Everton in West Yorkshire.

David Moyes and Everton might have been expecting an opening day win when they headed to Elland Road on Monday, but Leeds United were the ones that claimed all three points.

Lukas Nmecha scored a late penalty as Leeds beat Everton 1-0 last Monday, setting the Whites up for a potentially positive start to the new campaign under Daniel Farke.

And ahead of the game against Arsenal on Saturday, Leeds United have signed Noah Okafor from AC Milan, though whether the Swiss international will be a part of Farke’s squad for the game at the Emirates Stadium remains to be seen.

Although Leeds United have signed nine new players this summer, it looks like Farke could complete a few more deals before the September 1st deadline. Another name recently linked with a move to Elland Road is Christantus Uche at Getafe.

He is an attacking midfielder and Leeds certainly could do with another number 10 before the summer is out.

Everton plot move for Leeds United transfer target Christantus Uche

Just this week, reports have linked Leeds United with a move for Uche in La Liga. The Nigerian international impressed with Getafe last season, scoring four goals and assisting six more in 33 La Liga appearances. And it looks as though the 22-year-old could secure an exciting move to England before the summer transfer window is over, with Everton having now joined the race for his signature.

SoccerNet.ng report that Everton are planning to offer Getafe a fee of €30m (£25.95m) for the Super Eagles midfielder Uche. But there is confusion over the price tag; Uche actually has a €25m (£21.6m) release clause at Getafe, so why the Toffees might offer £25m remains to be seen.

There could be certain clauses within the release clause that might not appeal to Everton, and so Moyes might just try and blow the competition out of the water with a larger £26m bid. Whether or not Farke remains interested in signing a number 10 after signing Okafor, who can play across the front line, remains to be seen.

Noah Okafor says where he’ll likely play for Leeds United

Speaking after Leeds United confirmed the signing of Okafor, Dan James hailed the signing and explained how Okafor is good with both feet and can play across the front line. And Okafor himself has settled the debate on where he’s going to play under Farke.

Speaking after signing for the club, Okafor explained that his favourite position is on the left, so expect him to man that side with James on the right and then Joel Piroe leading the line, or perhaps Dominic Calvert-Lewin when he’s fit to do so.

Okafor said: “My favourite position is the left. I can play as a striker, or as one of two strikers, my position is left wing. This is where I can put most quality on the pitch.”

Uche then could fill in the number 10 role, or what seems to be like it could be more of a number eight role this season, with Leeds taking a slightly more defensive approach than they did last time round.

But Everton could well up the ante to sign Uche after their opening day defeat, with many Toffee fans on social media worried about the club’s transfer business so far this summer.
