Manchester United will not sign 26-year-old Danish international Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Correio da Manha, as relayed by Sport Witness, Morten Hjulmand has been the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are eager to bolster their first-team squad by signing a holding midfielder in the summer transfer window. So, the 26-year-old Sporting CP star has been a target for the Premier League outfit.
However, Manchester United will not sign the Dane in the summer transfer window, as Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas is “refusing to release him to Manchester United” or any other club. So, Ruben Amorim has “given up” on trying to reunite with one of his favourite former charges at Old Trafford.
Morten Hjulmand and his fruitful Sporting CP career so far
Morten Hjulmand has made considerable progress since joining Sporting CP from US Lecce in August 2023. The 26-year-old did not take long to establish a foothold at the Portuguese club, with Ruben Amorim bringing the best out of him and installing him as the club captain.
The Danish international has turned out nearly 100 times thus far for Sporting CP while chipping in with eight goals and six assists. Meanwhile, Hjulmand’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe, with Manchester United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
Will Ruben Amorim reunite with Hjulmand at Manchester United?
Manchester United’s interest in Morten Hjulmand makes sense. The Red Devils have been combing the market for a holding midfielder this summer amid uncertainties surrounding Casemiro’s long-term future. Additionally, Manuel Ugarte has struggled to be consistent since joining Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain last summer. Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen is no longer at the Premier League club.
So, Manchester United identified Carlos Baleba as the top target for the holding midfield berth before Brighton & Hove Albion ruled out a summer move. While the Cameroonian international remains a target, albeit for next summer, Hjulmand has been an alternative for this year. However, a deal for the 26-year-old Dane will not materialise.
Sporting CP will not part ways with the Dnaish international in the summer transfer window, with Frederico Varandas refusing to release him to Manchester United or any other club. So, Ruben Amorim has “given up” on trying to reunite with Hjulmand, and it will be interesting to see who the Red Devils turn to amid their search for a new holding midfielder.
