Liverpool agree deal for Lewis Koumas loan

Liverpool winger Lewis Koumas is set to depart on another season-long loan, with a deal now close and the 19-year-old set to undergo a medical this week.

Koumas began pre-season working with Arne Slot‘s first team, but after featuring in the opening friendly at Preston returned to the U21s squad for the majority of the warmup period.

He was absent from their 4-2 defeat to Leicester in their opening league game on Monday night, with Liverpool fielding interest from a number of clubs.

This Is Anfield understands a deal is being finalised to send Koumas to Championship side Birmingham City for the 2025/26 campaign.

The Wales international will undergo a medical before potentially linking up with Chris Davies’ side ahead of the weekend, though he is unlikely to be involved in their next fixture.

Birmingham will host Oxford United in their third game of the Championship season on Saturday, having taken four points so far from a 1-1 draw with Ipswich and a 2-1 victory over Blackburn.

Koumas’ switch to St Andrew’s comes after a campaign with Stoke, also in the second tier, last time out which saw him make 49 appearances.

However, while it was a largely productive spell which saw him produce six goals and three assists while playing in every position across the attacking line, it also saw the teenager work under four different managers.

The hope is that there will be more stability for Koumas at Birmingham, who are upwardly mobile following their takeover by American group Shelby Companies Ltd.

Liverpool are expected to sanction a number of other moves for their academy talents before the transfer deadline on September 1.

But This Is Anfield understands there has been no significant progress yet over deals for the likes of James McConnell and Kaide Gordon despite interest.

The same applies to Rhys Williams, who at 24 has found himself training with the U21s but was not involved as an over-age player in the defeat to Leicester earlier in the week.

Right-back Calvin Ramsay did start that game, however, along with striker Jayden Danns – both of whom could be made available before the window closes.
