Goodbye: “Really intelligent” Liverpool player set to leave this weekend – reliable journalist

Reliable journalist James Pearce has claimed that a “really intelligent” Liverpool player is now expected to complete a move away from the club as soon as this weekend.

There have been plenty of outgoings at Anfield this summer, with Trent Alexander-Arnold getting the ball rolling by joining Real Madrid.

Plenty of others have also moved on, though, including Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Jarell Quansah and Ben Doak, and it looks as though another individual is on his way out of the club, too.

That’s according to Pearce on X, who reports that Lewis Koumas is heading off to Championship side Birmingham City on a season-long loan:

“Lewis Koumas on a season-long loan to Birmingham should be completed in next 24 hours. No option to buy. Turned down Sheffield United among others.”

Ideal move for Koumas this summer

This feels like an ideal next step for Koumas, who spent last season on loan at Stoke City, enjoying a productive spell there and starting 43 out of 46 Championship matches

The 19-year-old is a big talent who can shine both out wide and in more of a central attacking role, with coach Marc Bridge-Wilkinson lauding his ability at Liverpool:

“He is good at running, he is full of energy and enthusiasm and his running off the ball is really intelligent; he can also finish. We just thought let’s give him a go there and felt it was something he might enjoy, which he certainly is. He was scoring goals, getting chances and ultimately playing consistently well.”

It was hard to see how Koumas was going to get many minutes at Liverpool this season, given the world-class attacking depth at Arne Slot’s disposal, so a year at Birmingham could be perfect for his development.

He needs to be enjoying regular football in order to keep progressing as a young footballer, and the Blues are a club on the rise, expecting to be among the contenders for promotion in the Championship in the 2025/26.

Hopefully, Koumas returns to Liverpool next summer as a more rounded footballer, before potentially sealing a permanent move away from the club, should Slot not see a long-term future for him.
