Exclusive: £15m Newcastle United player set to leave with loan exit 'close'

Newcastle United are in talks to allow Matt Targett to leave the club on loan, Geordie Boot Boys understands.

The club’s main focus as of late has been on incomings, with Malick Thiaw and Jacob Ramsey joining Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe’s squad has been strengthened this summer, while there is still desperation to bring in a striker. Newcastle want Jorgen Strand Larsen, as their Yoane Wissa deal begins to stall.

But there is still outgoing business to be done, as Matt Targett prepares to leave St James’ Park on a temporary basis.

Matt Targett closing in on Middlesbrough loan

Geordie Boot Boys can reveal via our transfer expert Graeme Bailey that a deal is being discussed for Targett to join Middlesbrough on loan from Newcastle United.

The 29-year-old is in talks to head to the Riverside Stadium on a season-long loan deal, as he potentially gets set to drop down into the Championship.

Geordie Boot Boys understand that a deal is close to being finalised, as Targett goes in search of regular first-team football.

It would be just the second time that Targett has played in the second tier of English football. He enjoyed a loan spell at Fulham in 2017/18 that ended with a playoff final win at Wembley over Aston Villa.

Why Newcastle United are willing to let Matt Targett leave

Having been so impressive on loan that he earned a permanent move to Newcastle worth £15million in the summer of 2022, Targett has fallen down the pecking order at St James’ Park.

Lewis Hall is the Magpies’ first choice left-back, while Tino Livramento has proven that he is incredibly comfortable in that position as well.

That has resulted in limited minutes for Targett, who has not started a Premier League game since September 2023.

Geordie Boot Boys understand that Eddie Howe loves Targett, but is unable to give him the first-team minutes that he needs.

That is why he is set to leave the club on loan, with Middlesbrough close to reaching an agreement.
