There never was an NFL team like the 1986 Chicago Bears and there probably never will be again.
Jim McMahon was an over the top QB, a punk from BYU believe it or not. Walter Payton was an elegant running back who is regarded as one of the very best to ever don pads. The defense was legitimately terrifying. The head coach and his defensive coordinator openly feuded in the media. And one of the things they feuded over was Clemson product William “the Refrigerator” Perry.
Perry was enormous for the era, weighing as much as 360 in his rookie season, but the DC, Buddy Ryan, called him a “wasted draft pick.
Perhaps to tweak Ryan somewhat, head coach Mike Ditka developed a fun wrinkle that caught America’s attention: he started to use Perry at fullback when the Bears were on the verge of a touchdown. It was an easy game to do fun stuff in: the Bears won, 46-10.
