Manchester United have reportedly upped their efforts for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton but face competition from three other teams if they wish to sign him this summer.

The 21-year-old has caught the eye with his performances since making the move to Selhurst Park form Blackburn Rovers in January 2024. His performance have seen him earn a call-up to the England squad.

It has led to talk that he could be set for a move away from Palace before the end of the current window. United are one of the teams linked with an interest in the player as Ruben Amorim looks to strengthen his midfield options.

The club hold an interest in Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba, but are not prepared to pay the Seagulls' asking price which stands at over £100 million.

Spanish outlet AS report that United are the most eager to sign the player this summer, and are 'dreaming of' completing the transfer. But they face competition from Real Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester City. It is added that Palace will not let the player go for anything less than €80 million (£69m).

Wharton’s age and talent is said to be attracting Real Madrid, who are on the lookout for a player who can dictate the tempo of the game from the middle of the pitch. But they won’t make a move unless there is a major sale before the end of the window. Winger Rodrygo has been linked with a move to the Premier League.

Palace are likely to be determined to keep hold of Wharton with Eberechi Eze closing in on a move to Arsenal. Defender Marc Guehi has also been heavily linked with Liverpool. The club therefore could hold a strong stance when it comes to selling another key player.

Head coach Oliver Glasner also appeared to hit out at the lack of preparation in the transfer window. "We are very, very late to find replacements,” he said after the club’s UEFA Conference League win.

“I think we could behaved much better than we did. It’s not the best way to start the season. I think we are below the edge."
