Newcastle United defender set to complete Middlesbrough loan switch

Middlesbrough are set to complete the loan signing of Newcastle United left-back Matt Targett, according to reporter Alex Crook.

Middlesbrough have got off to a fine start in the Championship as they look to a brighter future under Rob Edwards. The proven Championship promotion-winner arrived at Boro as the replacement for Michael Carrick earlier this summer.

It was a somewhat frustrating wait for the first signings of the summer transfer window on Teesside, but business has picked up, and more lays ahead.

Now, it seems the Championship side are set to complete the signing of Matt Targett.

Writing in a brief update on X, reporter Alex Crook has said that the Newcastle United left-back is set to make the short distance move from Tyneside to Teesside, linking up with Middlesbrough on loan.

It is not said whether an option to make the move permanent is included, but Targett is only under contract at St. James’ Park for another year. He will offer Edwards and Boro a new option on the left-hand side of defence, bringing Premier League experience and pedigree with him.

It now remains to be seen if a move can be sealed, with a medical required if one hasn’t already been completed.
