Are Albion lacking an impact sub? This is the balancing act facing Hurzeler in attack

But there will be an eye on how he manages his resources up front as [Albion](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/albion/) take on Everton – both from kick-off and looking for impact off the bench.

The head coach was asked about the versatile role Georginio Rutter is playing in his press conference ahead of the trip to Merseyside.

Both Rutter and Welbeck have been starting up front in pre-season.

They had 45 minutes apiece in the early games and were then kept apart as the club played two games on the same day against Southampton and Wolfsburg.

When the serious stuff came around, Rutter remained at the sharp end with Matt O’Riley playing behind him as Fulham visited the Amex.

Welbeck was introduced for the latter stages with the usually smiling Rutter not looking too happy at being removed.

O’Riley has made a strong case for inclusion and his interpretation of the role behind the front man is not the same as that which Rutter would bring.

All this while Stefanos Tzimas and Charalampos Kostoulas are still settling in.

We do not know what these two will offer and when they be will ready and at full speed in their new league but it feels like it will be a while.

When they first emerge, It may well be that add the impact off the bench for which Hurzeler is still looking as he names a matchday XX as opposed to a starting XI.

We know what Rutter and Welbeck offer and what their ideal roles are.

It also feels like Welbeck is better as a starter rather than as an impact player off the bench.

That search for impact as subs comes into the boss’s plans as much as just naming his best 11 players.

Hurzeler said: “With the loss of Joao (Pedro), we miss one more striker.

“Stefanos needs time to get up to speed so it's a little bit of a balance thing.

“You have two strikers with Danny and with Georgi, and you need to work out how to finish a game, how to start a game, how to finish strong.

“So, for example, if Georgi starts, you can have replace him with Danny.

“If you start with both, then you need to think about who's replacing them.

“It's more a balance thing. But I'm very happy that Georgi can play in both positions.

“He can play as the striker. He can play as a ten or an eight. So he's very flexible and that's something that helps us.”

Both Welbeck and Rutter add a lot around the squad as a whole, on and off the pitch.

Hurzeler said of Rutter: “He’s positive, always smiling, always there to joke. But when it's work, then he knows, all right, now I have to switch on.

“So he's really good in finding the balance. He's a great connector, I would say. He can connect with his team-mates.”

Albion have allowed target man Evan Ferguson and Julio Enciso, who can play as a false nine, to leave their attacking ranks this summer (since January, actually), although the door at Lancing will remain open to the former.

Given the chance, we know how well Rutter and Welbeck can combine.

A winning goal at Newcastle, when Rutter was playing wide on the right, was a great example.

Hurzeler had the luxury of Rutter, Welbeck and Ferguson all starting that day with Enciso and Kaoru Mitoma among the subs.

He does not quite have those riches at the moment and won’t until the Greek duo and Tommy Watson are in the picture.

The boss’s desire to have something up his sleeve on the bench is understandable but there are types of players who feel more suited to the impact role.

Welbeck is not one of those. Nor was Adam Lallana, for example. Diego Gomez is.

Simon Adingra played that role to perfection away to Everton a year ago.

Might it be that we see Yankuba Minteh or Mitoma on the bench at Hill Dickinson?

Back at the Thursday press conference, it was almost an obligatory enquiry to Hurzeler about more signings and knocking on Bloom’s door and his response was initially quite jokey.

“I’m not knocking on his door otherwise I would always have to travel to London. I’m happy living here in Brighton,” he said with a smile.

“We are in talks every day so we know our thoughts, we know both opinions. Let’s see what happens.

“There are always opportunities in football, so never say never in football.”

So leaving the door open to some doubt.

The more relevant question on Merseyside will be who gets to knock on Everton’s door from kick-off on Sunday.

Minteh as the impact sub with Rutter coming in from wide right? That could make sense and has a precedent from last season.

We know one thing. Hurzeler did not name a single unchanged XI last season.
