Newcastle United could be moving closer to another summer exit (no, not him).
It’s emerged today that Matt Targett could be leaving the club, with the rarely-used left-back receiving Championship interest as we move into the final 10 days of the transfer window.
As revealed by talkSPORT’s [Alex Crook](https://x.com/alex_crook/status/1958839399182897521) and Graeme Bailey, Targett looks set to join Middlesbrough.
The move is ‘close’ to being finalised and would see him join Rob Edwards’ promotion-chasing side on a season-long loan, with Boro currently second in the Championship after back-to-back wins to start the new season.
The 29-year-old is out of contract next season, so it’s unclear if he will be loaned out and then released, meaning the club miss out on any transfer fee for the ex-Southampton and Aston Villa man.
But, if this allows him to get some much needed game time elsewhere and sees Middlesbrough pay a portion of his fairly sizeable wages over the next year, it could make sense for all parties.
Targett has featured over pre-season, struggling in a 4-0 loss at Celtic and scoring in a draw with Espanyol just two weekends ago, but he is currently well behind Lewis Hall in the pecking order.
He made just two Premier League appearances last season, totalling just 19 minutes, with injuries and a bout of eczema impacting his hopes of featuring mor.
