Chicago Bulls will retire Derrick Rose’s No. 1 jersey in a Jan. 24 ceremony

The Chicago Bulls set a date to loft the jersey of hometown star Derrick Rose into the United Center rafters.

The team announced Thursday that Rose’s No. 1 jersey will be retired Jan. 24 in a ceremony after a home game against the Boston Celtics.

A Chicago native who won two state titles with Simeon, Rose reignited hope in his hometown team when the Bulls selected him with the No. 1 pick in the 2008 draft. He won Rookie of the Year, then became the youngest MVP in NBA history in 2011 while leading the Bulls to the Eastern Conference finals.

Although his career trajectory was irrevocably shifted by a knee injury in the first round of the 2012 playoffs, Rose went on to have a 15-year NBA career following stints with the New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers and Memphis Grizzlies. Rose retired as a three-time All-Star.

Former teammates including Joakim Noah, Luol Deng and Taj Gibson attended the ceremony. The morning before, Bulls Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf informed Rose of the team’s plan to retire his jersey.

The teams will offer a presale for season ticket holders on full, 20-game and 10-game plans. The sale date for individual tickets has not been announced.

The Bulls also are running a season-long promotion with giveaways of Rose figurines at four games: Nov. 4 against the Philadelphia 76ers, Dec. 17 against the Cavaliers, Feb. 22 against the Knicks and March 19 against the Cavaliers.
