An early trip to The Etihad
Etihad - 23.11.24
Thanks to Eugene Gasper for this picture.
One of our most astounding results in what was a dire Premier League season came at The Etihad on November 23rd last year when we beat Pep Guardiola's Manchester City 4-0! We had already beaten City in the Carabao Cup in October and faced them in November without Bentancur (banned), Romero, Van de Ven, Richarlison and Odobert (injured). This year we will be missing James Maddison, who scored two of our goals, and Kulusevski who made one of our assists in last season's corresponding game.
City hadn't conceded four or more goals at home since September 2020 when James Maddison scored for Leicester in a 5-2 win. City's 4-0 defeat to Spurs was their biggest home loss since February 2003 (5-1 vs Arsenal) and Pep Guardiola's joint-biggest home loss in his managerial career (4-0 v Real Madrid in April 2014).
City had their injury problems when we met last November, and their defeat to Spurs was a third consecutive loss in the Premier League. That would become four when they lost 2-0 at Anfield the following week. City suffered poor form in mid-season, but a late run of 10 games undefeated with seven wins secured for them another season in the Champions league. They finished third, but apart from winning last season's Community Shield (on penalties), City did not secure a major trophy. It was their first without a trophy (not including the Community Shield) since 2016-17, which was Pep Guardiola's first campaign at the club.
City did reach a seventh consecutive FA Cup semi-final, and of course the FA Cup Final where they lost 1-0 to Crystal Palace.
City did a lot of their incoming transfer business in advance of summer's Club World Cup. Left back Rayan Ait-Nouri arrived from Wolves, and midfielder Rayan Cherki signed from Lyon. 33-year-old goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli came from Chelsea, to act as a back-up keeper following the departure of Scott Carson. Bettinelli had played two games for Chelsea in the last four seasons.
Another midfielder - Tijjani Reijnders - signed from AC Milan and 18-year-old Sverre Nypan is a longer term signing from Rosenborg. Another goalkeeper James Trafford returned to his first club (from Burnley) and played in last Saturday evening's opener, when City thrashed Wolves 4-0 at Molineux to claim the early top spot in the table.
Ait-Nouri, Reijnders and Cherki all made their Premier League debuts for City last week. Reijnders and Cherki scored for good measure. Kevin de Bruyne has gone to Antonio Conte's Napoli. 22-year-old James McAtee has gone to Forest for good money.
After the disappointment/embarrassment of the Eze transfer we await news of a possible Savinho move to Spurs from City.
During the summer club world cup tournament Erling Haaland reached 300 career goals for club and country at the age of just 24. He scored two goals last week at Molineux.
Manchester City have agreed a new kit deal with Puma which could eventually be worth £1 billion. The agreement for at least 10 more years is believed to be the highest value deal of its kind in Premier League history. City's extension is believed to be worth around £100 million per season, an increase on the previous terms, which were worth £65 million each campaign.
We still await the result of the long standing case of those 115 charges laid in February 2023, which related to alleged rule breaches between 2009 and 2018. Don't hold your breath!
We have completed more Premier League "doubles" (9) against Man City than against any other team.
Tottenham have scored at least twice in each of their past four top-flight games at the Etihad Stadium.
Spurs became the first team to score multiple goals in four consecutive Premier League matches away to City.
Spurs have won three of their last 16 fixtures away to City in all competitions (D3, L10).
I anticipate a formation and strategy similar to that used against PSG in the European Super Cup last Wednesday. I hope for a draw and predict a 2-2 scoreline. The game kicks off at 12.30 tomorrow on TNT.
Did you know? - Although they were founder members of the Premier League, having won promotion in 1989, City have been relegated twice from the Premier League, firstly in 1996, when they finished third from bottom, and secondly after only one season in 2001, when they again finished 18th. They won promotion after just one season this time, finishing top with 99 points.
Our match referee (for the fifteenth time) will be Peter Bankes. Last week he officiated the Nottingham Forest v Brentford game and issued three yellow cards. In May he had charge of City's home win over Wolves and also his last Spurs game when we lost 2-0 at Villa Park.
