Chelsea can break unwanted record that has stood since 2021 with win over West Ham

Chelsea will be looking to secure their first win of the season when they take the short trip across London to face West Ham at the London Stadium.

The Blues will be hoping to put in a much more convincing performance this time around after they were held to a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge by Crystal Palace.

Enzo Maresca is set to be boosted by the return of Tosin Adarabioyo after he missed the opener through injury. He will still be missing Levi Colwill for a number of months though.

The table is never too important to look at around this time of the season, however it does not currently read pretty viewing for the Blues. They currently sit ninth.

Chelsea can top Premier League for first time since 2021 with win vs West Ham

However, the fact they are the first game of the weekend means that they have a chance to make a statement to their fellow top four and title contenders.

West Ham will also be hoping to kickstart their season following an emphatic opening day defeat, however Graham Potter has admitted they’ll need some luck to beat Chelsea.

If Chelsea do win on Friday night, they will be the first team to acquire four points this season, and therefore end the day top of the Premier League.

Last time Chelsea were top of the Premier League

There is an element of irony to the last time Chelsea found themselves ending a day at the top of the Premier League table, as it had come following a defeat in the opening match of the weekend.

This was also against West Ham, where Thiago Silva and Mason Mount’s goals were not enough as they fell to a 3-2 defeat in East London.

Things are completely different now at Stamford Bridge with Maresca at the helm, and there is confidence that this can be the season to mount a serious title charge.

A win is going to have to come soon though, and supporters probably couldn’t think of a better opposition side than West Ham.
