LAS VEGAS -- The father of Boston Celtics star and NBA champion Jaylen Brown was arrested Wednesday on accusations that he stabbed a man in Las Vegas.
Quenton Marselles Brown, 57, was charged with attempted murder and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on Thursday morning, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. He was being held on $300,000 bail after a court appearance Thursday.
Brown, a former professional boxer, is accused of stabbing another man after a “door ding” in a parking lot.
The victim’s girlfriend said she and her boyfriend were sitting in their car in a parking lot when an SUV parked next to them, opened the passenger door and hit the victim’s driver side door, according to a police report. The victim got out of his vehicle to inspect for damage and was immediately confronted by Brown, who responded with profanity and said it was “just a bump,” reports KSNV-TV in Las Vegas.
The victim then slapped a side mirror on Brown’s vehicle, and Brown responded by asking the victim if he wanted to fight.
As the victim turned his back to walk away, Brown “swung his arm in a straight stabbing motion” and struck him in the back with an unspecified object. The victim attempted to run away, but was caught by Brown, who stabbed him in the abdomen, police said.
The victim and his girlfriend drove off to a local pharmacy, where they called police to report a stabbing. Police responded to the scene around 5:42 p.m., where they located the victim who appeared to have suffered several stab wounds. The victim was transported to a hospital to treat the stab wounds and broken ribs and remains in critical condition.
Brown, meanwhile, was located by police a short distance from the scene of the incident and was detained.
Brown’s lawyer, Arnold Weinstock, said his client acted in self-defense after the victim struck him in the head with a gun during the incident.
“Everything I know, and I’ve known Mr. Brown for quite some time, I do not believe that he initiated anything,” Weinstock told KSNV-TV. “He is telling me that everything that occurred was him trying to defend himself after he was struck.”
Brown was previously arrested by police in Henderson, Nevada, in 2016 on suspicion of battery resulting in substantial bodily harm, according to the police report.
Brown, described by police as 7 feet tall and 300 pounds, fought as a professional heavyweight boxer from 1989-2016, compiling a career record of 33-18-1, including 25 wins by KO. The former World Boxing Union champion last fought in November 2016, when he defeated Juan Lopez Alcaraz at the Palenque del Parque Morelos in Tijuana, Mexico, according to BoxRec.
His son, Jaylen, is a nine-year NBA veteran and four-time All-Star who helped lead the Celtics to win the 2024 NBA championship, including being named 2024 NBA Finals MVP. The 6-6 forward holds career averages of 19 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 30.6 minutes per game in 603 games for the Celtics.
