Morten Hjulmand reportedly caught the eye of his former boss, Ruben Amorim
Manchester United have been handed a blow in their pursuit for Morten Hjulmand following a recent approach, according to reports in Portugal.
After deciding against pursing a deal at this time for Carlos Baleba , United have looked at alternative options. One of those options was Hjulmand, having worked with Ruben Amorim at Sporting Clube de Portugal.
Italian media previously Now, Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha (via Sport Witness) have provided an update on Hjulmand's future, claiming that United's move was blocked by Sporting.
It's said that Sporting president Frederico Varandas is determined not to let Hjulmand leave for United or any other club. He is highly valued by the club as a key player and leader in Rui Borges’ squad.
The report also goes on to add that Varandas plans to reward Hjulmand with a new deal that will include a salary increase. It’s also highlighted that Amorim has 'given up' on signing his former player, meaning the Reds may now have to consider other targets.
Hjulmand joined Sporting from Lecce for £15.8 million in August 2023 and has made an immediate impact in Lisbon. The former Admira Wacker midfielder helped Amorim’s side secure the Primeira Liga title in his debut season and added another league triumph in the following campaign.
The Sporting captain has caught the eye of several European clubs, including Juventus and . But for now, he looks set to remain in Lisbon, with three years left on his current deal.
