West Ham have begun to prepare for life without Edson Alvarez as he appears set to leave in the coming days.

The Mexico international seems to have played his last game for the East London club as West Ham have agreed terms with Fenerbahce over the deal.

Alvarez will leave the London Stadium outfit on a season-long deal with no obligation to buy.

West Ham table Soungoutou Magassa bid

Graham Potter wants the West Ham hierarchy to bring in a new midfielder before the end of the transfer window.

This has led to their pursuit of Southampton’s Mateus Fernandes, who could leave the St. Mary’s club after their relegation.

However, their asking price of £50million appears to be what is putting off the Hammers.

Monaco’s Soungoutou Magassa is another midfielder who has popped up on their radar as they’re looking to bring him to the London Stadium.

According to the Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg on 22 August, the Irons have made a bid for the 21-year-old French midfielder.

Graham Potter would welcome Soungoutou Magassa’s arrival

Potter would likely welcome Magassa’s arrival due to his versatility, youth and potential to bolster the squad’s midfield.

The 21-year-old’s ability to play as a defensive midfielder or centre-back aligns with Potter’s tactical flexibility, allowing him to adapt formations like the 3-4-2-1 or 4-1-4-1 he used at Brighton.

With West Ham’s midfield needing reinforcement after Alvarez’s exit, Magassa’s box-to-box energy and physicality would add dynamism and depth.

His 29 appearances for Monaco last season, including Champions League experience and his role in France’s Under-21 and Olympic teams, demonstrate his readiness for the Premier League.

Potter’s focus on building a youthful, energetic squad, as seen with recent signings like El Hadji Malick Diouf, makes Magassa an ideal fit.

His 85.57% pass completion and defensive solidity would help the Hammers control games, addressing Potter’s call for better basics after a shaky start.
