'Do I upset Alan Shearer?': Gary Lineker makes his prediction for Newcastle United vs Liverpool

Gary Lineker has made his prediction for Newcastle United’s game against Liverpool at St James’ Park on Monday night.

Their first competitive home game in three months, the Magpies are back at St James’ Park for one of the most talked-about games in a long time.

Newcastle United take on Liverpool in their second Premier League game of the season, and while the clash is mouthwatering in its own right, movements off the pitch have taken tensions between the two clubs to another level.

Speculation over Alexander Isak’s future has been a big talking point in the Premier League this summer. Isak has made it clear that he wants to leave Newcastle, and Liverpool are very interested. It was confirmed that Liverpool had made a £110million bid for Isak in early August, though the approach was quickly turned down by club figures.

Isak will likely miss the Liverpool game as he is training on his own, though Eddie Howe is hopeful he will return to first-team training soon.

The St James’ Park atmosphere should be intense, but Lineker believes Liverpool can weather the storm and come out on top.

“Do I upset Alan Shearer? Or do I not upset Alan Shearer?” he said.

“I think I’m going to upset him! All the turmoil around the club with (Alexander) Isak is going to have a knock-on effect, however good they did last season.

The last time Liverpool came to St James’ Park, it was a thriller

With Isak still not in the first-team picture, it is likely that Anthony Gordon will lead the line for Newcastle, with Howe seemingly not fully trusting William Osula.

It means that Harvey Barnes will keep his place on the left wing, despite his lacklustre performance against Aston Villa.

Many fans will recall Newcastle’s Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool in March, but the hope is the game can be as entertaining as the Reds’ last visit to St James’ Park in December 2024.

Newcastle were 3-2 down heading into stoppage time before Fabian Schar bundled in from a set-piece to level the game. The Magpies could have even won the game as they broke away late on, only for the referee to blow the full-time whistle.

The draw against Villa showed that Newcastle’s defence is up for the challenge of facing top clubs, but the likes of Schar and Dan Burn will need to be at the top of their game to get a result on home turf.
