One member of the sports media sphere and former NFL star Steve Smith Sr. found himself in a heap of trouble earlier this year when his alleged involvement in an extramarital affair went public and viral on social media.
Anthony Martinez filed a civil lawsuit against Smith in North Carolina’s Mecklenburg County Superior Court in March. He is seeking over $100,000 in damages under a “homewrecker” law in North Carolina.
On Thursday, Smith Sr. acknowledged the situation while calling a preseason game for the Carolina Panthers. He was asked during the broadcast if he’d treat fans to a Bojangles chicken sandwich if they saw him.
“Nah, bro, it’s one chicken sandwich. Man, y’all know my situation. I can’t afford to be helping anybody right now,” Smith responded, per Awful Announcing.
Fans reacted to the moment on social media.
“Brother is fighting for his life and they’re trying to sign him up to cover everyone’s tab,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Bro can’t even buy a chicken sandwich that’s hood bankruptcy if I’ve ever seen it,” someone else added.
“He’s the absolute worst commentator. Hate playing the panthers in Carolina in the preseason because I have to listen to that (idiot) ramble on and try to make it about himself all night, one fan added.
Hopefully, Smith Sr. figures out all of his money troubles soon.
