Report: Man Utd 'accelerating' deal to sign 'extraordinary' Baleba alternative alongside Lammens

Manchester United are accelerating a deal to sign Sevilla midfielder Lucien Agoume ahead of the transfer deadline, Spanish publication Fichajes has claimed.

The Old Trafford side are aiming to bring in a new midfielder before the window shuts on September 1 and have identified Agoume as an alternative to Carlos Baleba.

United ended their pursuit of the 21-year-old last week after learning of Brighton’s hefty demands, which reportedly stand at around £120m.

Agoume is believed to be one of the primary names next on their list and would be a far less expensive signing than Baleba, with Fichajes claiming his release clause stands at £35m.

According to Fichajes, Agoume has emerged as an ‘ideal’ option for Ruben Amorim to bolster his midfield, with his physicality, tactical awareness and composure under pressure making him a strong alternative to Baleba.

The ‘extraordinary’ 23-year-old is reportedly being tracked by several Premier League clubs ahead of the deadline, but United are viewed as favourites to win the race.

There is a sense that an offer worth around €25m (£21.5m), including a sell-on fee, could be enough to convince Sevilla to part ways with the France U21 international.

The Andalusian club are aware they may struggle to keep the midfielder if a bid arrives, as Agoume sees Sevilla more as a stepping stone in the early stages of his career.

Agoume, who is under contract until June 2028, played a key role in Sevilla’s domestic campaign last term, making 35 La Liga appearances and registering four goal contributions.

He helped the Spanish side narrowly avoid relegation, with the seven-time Europa League winners finishing 17th, just one point above the drop zone.

Agoume joined Sevilla from Inter Milan in January 2024 after making just four senior appearances for the Serie A club, including a single cameo in their title-winning 2023/24 campaign.

Man United are also working on a deal to bring in Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens before the deadline, with personal terms almost agreed for the 23-year-old.
