Report: 49ers Pull Off Trade to Improve Behind Christian McCaffrey

The San Francisco 49ers are looking to get back to being a Super Bowl contender during the upcoming 2025 NFL season. After missing the playoffs last season and making it to the Super Bowl the year before, no one knows quite what to expect from the 49ers this year.

With that being said, John Lynch has been looking to add more talent to the roster to give San Francisco a better chance to make noise in the stacked NFC.

On Friday, the 49ers made a big move. They went out and pulled off a trade with the Washington Commanders to land running back Brian Robinson in exchange for a sixth round pick.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter was the first to report the news that San Francisco and the Commanders had agreed to the trade.

"Trade: Commanders are trading RB Brian Robinson to the 49ers in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick, sources tell ESPN," Schefter wrote on X.

Robinson is a big depth addition for the 49ers. Last season, Christian McCaffrey missed most of the season due to injury. San Francisco struggled on the ground, which made things much more difficult on franchise quarterback Brock Purdy.

During the 2024 NFL season in Washington, Robinson played in 14 games, carrying the football 187 times for 799 yards and eight touchdowns. Those numbers average out to a solid 4.3 yards per carry.

In addition to his numbers on the ground, Robinson also caught 14 passes for 159 yards.

At 26 years old, Robinson will give the 49ers a player who could step in as a starter if needed. He'll also be utilized in a role that keeps McCaffrey fresh and healthy throughout the year.

Being able to acquire a talent like Robinson for a sixth-round pick is a no-brainer move. Lynch took a step towards getting back into contention with this trade.

Expect to hear more rumors and roster movement with teams cutting down their rosters ahead of the regular season. For now, San Francisco is a big winner and have filled out their running back room with a very talented option behind McCaffrey.
