Douglas Luiz signs initial loan at Nottingham Forest

The 27-year-old Brazilian adds to Nottingham Forest's latest transfer spree which includes the acquisitions of James McAtee, Omari Hutchinson and Arnaud Kalimuendo.

He joins on a season-long loan from Juventus with an obligation to buy as long as the Brazilian surpasses a set number of games in Garibaldi.

Luiz often adopts a deeper role as a pacemaker and boasts a strong defensive presence, but has the capacity to operate in more advanced areas.

Forest chiefs have earmarked him for some time, and his appeal was heightened following his four Premier League campaigns at Aston Villa, and he gained Champions League experience last term.

He graduated from Vasco da Gama's academy in his homeland, progressing to the first team setup and helping them seal promotion to their domestic top flight in 2016.

Manchester City then embarked on an exotic scouting adventure to locate Luiz's talent and recognised his brimming potential equipped for a Premier League environment.

He was denied a first taste of English football as The Citizens immediately loaned him out to La Liga outfit and newly-acquired sister club Girona due to personal work permit issues.

These issues were resolved in 2019 so Aston Villa could pursue his signing. He missed just two Premier League games in his first season, often playing behind John McGinn and Jack Grealish.

Villa had been promoted to the Championship and narrowly avoided relegation by one point, finishing in 17th place by virtue of incomings like Luiz.

When Unai Emery was appointed in November 2022, he seemed to encourage Luiz to explore his abilities further forward, and gradually his attacking output would increase.

With interest from clubs like Arsenal emerging, he penned a longer deal a month prior to Emery's arrival.

Villa returned to Europe for the first time in more than 40 years, and Luiz was lurking on the edge of the area to steer home the opener at Villa Park against European competitors Brighton on the final day to clinch that coveted Conference League spot.

In what turned out to be his final campaign in a Villa shirt in 2023/24, Luiz's durability and quality shone through the most.

He amassed 53 appearances in all competitions, which was his greatest tally in his career. 10 goals and 10 assists highlighted considerable improvement in his offensive contributions, even managing the same amount of progressive passes as Phil Foden in the league.

Aston Villa ultimately fell short in the Conference League in the semi-finals that season. Despite their missed European objective, Emery's outfit secured 4th place, granting them historic Champions League qualification.

As Villa's PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) headroom became limited, Luiz was a feasible option to help comply with those regulations. Luiz joined Juventus ahead of last season for a fee of 50 million euros.

During his spell at the two-time Champions League winners, he played 27 times, including in six Champions League ties.

However, he only made the starting eleven three times in Serie A with injuries halting his progress, and also competing with Manual Locatelli and Khephren Thuram-Ulien for the nod from Thiago Motta became a struggle.

A return to English football always seemed on the cards, and former Arsenal Sporting Director Edu Gaspar, who had long-been an admirer, switched allegiances for a role as Global Head of Football at Nottingham Forest.

He has been a key figure, undoubtedly alongside owner Evangelos Marinakis particularly in this deal, but also in Forest's overall business this summer.

The sum of money spent this transfer window at the club has set a high standard for Forest and provided the tools for the manager with the Europa League campaign ahead.

Although Ibrahim Sangare's opening day performance impressed as he orchestrated play and protected the defence, an upgrade to strengthen the squad is a significant decision which may pay dividends.

The currently injured Nicolas Dominguez and Ryan Yates may fall out of favour with Luiz's introduction, yet for Nuno to have multiple options at his disposal in the deep-lying midfielder position is important across the season.
