Colts coach on Anthony Richardson: ‘I’ve tried everything I can do’

The NFL community was stunned earlier this week when the Indianapolis Colts named Daniel Jones the team’s starting quarterback for the 2025 season after holding an open competition for the job between him and former Colts first-round pick Anthony Richardson this offseason.

Now, Richardson’s position coach is saying there’s nothing more he could’ve done for the young quarterback to win the job, and that he doesn’t know if Richardson could’ve done more either.

“I mean, no, as a position coach, you want to see your guy succeed and be successful naturally,” Cam Turner said, according to Pro Football Talk. “I feel like I’ve tried everything I can do, and I feel like he’s given great effort in that aspect, too.

“I don’t think, either way, it’s one or the other. I just think right now, it’s not where . . . . The consistency’s just not where we want it to be.”

“The plan for him is to continue to develop,” Turner said. “He still has a job, a role, a responsibility, which is our backup quarterback, and he has to be prepared to do that. And then my job is to help develop him and continue to grow, because he is so young. We don’t want to give up on him. We want to keep growing, continuing to learn and develop as a quarterback.”

Fans reacted to the brutal statement on social media.

“Way too many QB are taken as a developmental project based on speed, size or arm strength. Can’t fault Colts for reaching in the draft, but it’s on them for playing him when he’s not ready. You can say this about most QBS drafted in first 2 rounds,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“The HC and GM are on the hot seat. They will go with the better QB. Why is this so hard to figure out? They don’t have time to develop him anymore,” someone else added.

“This all is because the coach is scared of losing his job, he no longer cares about what’s good for the team he only cares about what can get him another year of employment,” another fan added.

It’ll be interesting to see where Richardson goes from here.
