'Now': Steve McManaman says Liverpool already have a player better than Rodrygo as new transfer claim emerges

Liverpool have been big players in the 2025-26 summer transfer window.

They’ve spent over £250million on improving their ranks this summer and, since there’s still some time for deals to be made, it doesn’t look like they’re stopping there.

Indeed, Alexander Isak is the player that most fans expect to join Liverpool before deadline day, but with the way things seem to be headed, that doesn’t feel guaranteed.

This has resulted in several other transfer rumours emerging, with Real Madrid’s Rodrygo among those linked with an Anfield switch once again.

The Reds are reportedly in a two-horse race against Manchester City for the Brazilian, who has been left out of Xabi Alonso’s plans ever since he arrived.

Steve McManaman believes Cody Gakpo is better than Rodrygo

As mentioned, Rodrygo is a player who has been eyed up by Liverpool since the Club World Cup.

Although rumours haven’t been as rife over the last couple of weeks, it’s clear that there’s still some interest there with Steve McManaman sharing his thoughts on who’s the better player out of Rodrygo and Cody Gakpo.

When asked who was better out of Eduardo Camavinga and Alexis Mac Allister, McManaman said the following to METRO: “Bloody hell, Alexis Mac Allister at this moment in time.”

He was then asked who was better out of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jeremie Frimpong, to which he simply replied “Trent.”

Finally, McManaman was then asked about Rodrygo and Cody Gakpo, to which he gave a more in-depth answer about: “That’s harder that one, if you ask me now, tomorrow, I’d say Cody Gakpo.

Rodrygo would be a smart transfer for Liverpool to make this summer

With things not heading how Liverpool would’ve wanted with Isak, it feels like the Reds need to cut their losses and move on.

That is, unless Newcastle miraculously manage to find two top-class strikers to join their ranks this summer.

However, as far as back-up options go, it’s going to be hard for Liverpool to do much better than Real Madrid’s Rodrygo.

The Brazilian can play anywhere across the front three, and since he’s only 24 years old, there’s still plenty of time for him to grow into an even better player than he already is.

And, a deal for Rodrygo would likely be much cheaper than Isak, especially since he’s been out of favour with Los Blancos for some time now.

Of course, only time will tell what the future has in store, but at the moment, it’s anyone’s guess what could happen.
