Pittsburgh Steelers release quarterback with Arthur Smith ties

The Pittsburgh Steelers are releasing quarterback Logan Woodside, the team announced as part of their 11 cuts on Friday.

Woodside was signed by the Steelers after Will Howard’s hand injury, but the veteran struggled in his preseason chances with the team.

He finished 8 of 15 with 83 passing yards and one interception and no touchdowns as the third quarterback in every game.

The Steelers signed him with his experience in offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s scheme, but Woodside’s struggles led to him getting his release.

Woodside, a University of Toledo graduate, was a seventh-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2018 NFL Draft.

He played for Smith in Tennessee while with the Titans, and spent four seasons from 2019 to 2022 in Nashville. Smith then linked up with him again in Atlanta, where he remained from the end of 2022 through 2023. Woodside returned to Cincinnati in 2024.

The Steelers saw Skylar Thompson shine in his preseason opportunities in lieu of Howard, and the former Dolphins quarterback likely earned his way onto the practice squad at the very least.

The Steelers have a tough decision to make at quarterback, but Woodside was the obvious move to make given his struggles over the two preseason games he played in for the team.
