**Newcastle United look set to clear a big chunk of change off the wage bill this season as Matt Targett looks set to move out on loan.**
Matt Targett won't have far to travel if the move comes off, as [BBC Tees claim](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/ce35pzq5g71o) that the £15 million left-back is set to move to Middlesbrough on loan for the season.
Targett was a huge part of the amazing job Eddie Howe did in his first six months at Newcastle United, taking a side that hadn't won a game from 19th in the Premier League to an 11th-place finish in what was a miraculous turnaround.
The Aston Villa loanee was so impressive that fans, and even Bruno Guimaraes, called for his move to be made permanent, which it eventually was later in the summer of 2022, costing the Magpies £15 million, including the initial loan fee.

Moving Targett
Matt Targett's Newcastle United career peaked before he signed permanently
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately, that's pretty much where Targett's Newcastle career peaked as injury after injury kept the full-back out of more games than he was ever involved in.
He returned to action in pre-season this summer and looked half decent, but then he was nowhere to be seen in the match-day squad on Saturday as Newcastle travelled to his old club, Aston Villa.
Having made just five appearances last season, too, an exit this summer seemed like the right call, but Targett is on a hefty wage, and that's making it hard to find him a new club.
Newcastle will likely have to contribute to Targett's wages still
We expect that Newcastle will continue to pay a portion of Targett's wages should a loan move to Middlesbrough materialise, but every little helps when it comes to PSR.
There has been nothing from either club to suggest that the deal for the 29-year-old has been done, but the BBC article is worded in a way that suggests it's a done deal.
Hopefully, we'll find out more over the weekend.
