Graham Potter is staring down the barrel of a loaded gun after West Ham were thrashed 5-1 by Chelsea in front of their home fans on Friday night.

Despite Lucas Paqueta’s early stunner taking the roof off the London Stadium, goals by Joao Pedro, Pedro Neto, Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Trevoh Chalobah dealt West Ham a heavy defeat for a second Premier League match in a row.

Potter, 50, was hired to replace Julen Lopetegui in January but has so far failed to win more points than his predecessor and, more importantly, failed to win over the fans.

In fact, Potter is statistically the worst manager in West Ham’s Premier League history when looking at points-per-game.

His job is starting to look untenable, leading to Richard Keys mocking Hammers vice-chair Karren Brady for her comments about the ex-Chelsea boss.

Karren Brady backed Graham Potter to win trophies

Keys has never been a fan of Potter’s appointment at West Ham, claiming in January that he’d have to “be more Harry Potter to get success” at the club.

When he was hired, Brady backed Potter to win silverware at the London Stadium – something which also drew the ire of the former Sky Sports host, who’s now still trying to maintain relevance in the Middle East.

As the Irons lost 5-1 to Chelsea at the old Olympic Stadium on Friday night, Keys was back on social media, dredging up Brady’s misguided comments from earlier this year.

“‘The foundations are in place for further success. We have appointed not only a good man but the right man. He will lead us to trophies’ – Karren Brady on appointing Potter,” said Keys.

“I said at the time he wouldn’t,” he finished, adding a couple of laughing emojis to mock the businesswoman’s initial ambition for the now-under-fire boss.

What’s next for Graham Potter?

Potter’s now managed 21 games for West Ham.

He’s had almost two full transfer windows and the luxury of players like Mohammed Kudus, Jarrod Bowen and Paqueta in his squad.

While the defence has been absolutely rotten and PSR has restricted West Ham’s transfer movement, the ex-Brighton boss has no doubt had enough time to at least show some kind of improvement since taking the reins from Lopetegui in January.

Potter’s West Ham stats

Games managed 21

Wins 6

Losses 11

Goals difference -6

Hammers fans will be calling into radio shows and taking to social media to demand Potter’s sacking but right now, getting rid doesn’t make a lot of sense.

It would be one helluva knee-jerk reaction to axe a manager just two games into the season.

He needs more time but, more importantly, he needs money to spend.
