West Ham 1-5 Chelsea: Five-star Blues thrash hapless Hammers to secure first win of the season

A scintilating showing from Chelsea secured an impressive 5-1 victory over West Ham to pick up their first three points of the campaign.

The Hammers took an early when a stunning strike from Lucas Paqueta sailed into the top right corner. However, just nine minutes later, the West Londoners responded when Pedro Neto's corner was headed home by Joao Pedro to level the match.

West Ham thought they had swfitly retaken the lead when Niclas Fullkrug found the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out by VAR after Jean-Clair Todibo was shown to be offside in the build-up.

That decision swung the momentum in Chelsea's favour, as the Blues took the lead courtesy of Neto, who snuck in at the backpost to apply a fine finish. The away side then made it three when a piece of samba flair from Estevao ended with Enzo Fernandez tapping home.

The Blues started the second half how they ended the first and scored with another corner when a poor clearance from goalkeeper Mads Hermansen resulted in Moises Caicedo latching onto the loose ball and poking home.

Just minutes later, the Hammers conceded from yet another set piece, with defender Trevoh Chalobah finding the net from close range to make it five. Victory for Chelsea puts them on four points from a possible six whilst West Ham's early season woes continue.

Story of the Match

West Ham manager Graham Potter made just one change from their opening day defeat to Sunderland, as Tomas Soucek partnered James Ward-Prowse in midfield, with Guido Rodriguez dropping to the bench.

Meanwhile, for Chelsea, Enzo Maresca handed a first Premier League start to striker Liam Delap, with Joao Pedro moving out wide. In defence, Tosin Adarabioyo returned from injury to partner Trevoh Chalobah at centre-back whilst Reece James made way for Malo Gusto at right-back.

However, shortly before kick-off, the West Londoners were dealt a blow when Cole Palmer suffered an injury in the warm-up, with Brazilian youngster Estevao taking his place.

With six minutes on the clock, West Ham made the perfect start when the Blues failed to close down Lucas Paqueta, who had plenty of space on the edge of the area, before rifling a delightful left footed strike into the top right corner.

Up the other end, the away side threatened an equaliser when Pedro Neto's pinpoint cross was headed away by El Malick Diouf. However, from the resulting corner, Chelsea levelled proceedings. Neto's corner was headed on by Marc Cucurella and into the path of Pedro, who headed home from close range.

However, not long later, West Ham thought they had retaken the lead when Niclas Fullkrug slotted home from close range - only for VAR to intervene and rule the goal out due to an offside in the build-up. The German then had another chance from a corner but could only head over.

Midway through the first half, Chelsea turned the game on its head when Chalobah won back possession inside the Hammers half, before sliding through Pedro, who picked out Neto at the backpost, as the Portuguese fired the ball into the back of the net.

Despite the early setback, the Blues were very much in the driving seat and soon added a third. Some excellent hold up play from Delap allowed Estevao to run onto the ball, who pushed forward into the penalty area before unselfishly setting up Enzo Fernandez, who tapped into an empty net.

Maresca's side certainly made an excellent response to going behind and dominated in possession as they took a 3-1 lead into half-time. West Ham, meanwhile, were struggling to get a foothold in the game despite a promising start.

It took Chelsea just five minutes to conjure up their first effort of the second half - Fernandez played the ball out wide to Neto, who picked out the Argentine in the middle, but the midfielder could only fire over.

However, just minutes later, the Blues made it 4-1 when a Fernandez corner was completely missed by goalkeeper Mads Hermansen before falling kindly into the path of Moises Caicedo, whose effort went in off the crossbar.

Things soon went from bad to worse for the Hammers, who failed to clear yet another corner, which resulted in Trevoh Chalobah poking the ball home to add a fifth.

Meanwhile, the home side had a rare sighting of goal when Jarrod Bowen crossed the ball towards substitute Callum Wilson, who headed off-target. West Ham youngster Freddie Potts then tested Robert Sanchez with a brilliant strike, but the Spanish shot stopper was alert to the danger.

However, the Blues almost made it six when club captain Reece James played a delightful through ball into Estevao, who weaved into the penalty area before being denied by Hermansen. James Ward-Prowse then had a late chance from a free-kick, but could only see his attempt blocked.

On a night where many of Chelsea's star players flourished, it was Brazilian forward Joao Pedro who helped start the comeback by heading home the equaliser, before going on to assist Pedro Neto just eight minutes later, along with Chalobah in the second half.

Having started the match out wide, Pedro was a constant problem down the wing for the West Ham defence by getting in plenty of good attacking areas. Another strong performance from one of Chelsea's new recruits.
