Tottenham star keen to rekindle ‘great’ relationship after injury hit 2024-25 campaign

Cristian Romero is keen to rekindle his relationship with Micky can de Ven at Tottenham Hotspur

There is no denying the fact that Tottenham look solid defensively whenever Cristian Romero partners up with Micky van de Ven at the back. The defensive pair understand each other’s game perfectly and form one of the strongest partnerships in the Premier League. The Lilywhites also look assured while defending when the two are in the starting eleven.

Both have contrasting game styles that end up becoming the perfect match. And we could see that during the latter stages of last season. The pair were crucial in the knockout stages of the Europa League as they kept three clean sheets in seven knockout games, ensuring Spurs lifted the Europa League in the end.

Cristian Romero is keen to rekindle his relationship with Micky can de Ven at Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham are a much better team with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven at the back.

However, both players have not managed to play together as much as they would have liked due to the injury issues they have suffered since last season. But under Thomas Frank, the defensive duo made a great start as they both got on the scoresheet against PSG in the UEFA Super Cup final. Not only that, but Romero and Van de Ven also managed to keep a clean sheet in the first Premier League game of the season.

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero hopes to play alongside Micky van de Ven a lot more this season

Tottenham are a much better team with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven playing in the starting eleven. However, last season’s injury crisis at the back meant that the pair played alongside each other on just 18 occasions. Fans will hope that this season paints a different picture and both defenders get to play alongside each other often as Spurs will be up against some of Europe’s elite teams.

Cristian Romero also hopes that both Micky van de Ven and him can stay fit this season as Thomas Frank kickstarts a new era at N17. Speaking to Telemundo Deportes (via TBR Football), Romero said,

“We have a great relationship since the day he arrived. We made a good central duo and nothing is perfect; there are always things to improve. But we know each other, we know each other’s way of playing, so we complement each other very well.”

The Spurs captain added,

“As I said, last season, unfortunately, both he and I suffered so many injuries that we missed almost 50 percent of the season and that’s hard for the coach, for the team and everyone. So, this season, we hope not to have that bad luck and be able to be well to face this season in the best way possible.”

Cristian Romero indicated straightaway that he and Micky van de Ven shared a ‘great’ relationship and both defenders are always looking to improve. The Argentine defender adds that they complement each other’s game well after playing together for two years. However, Romero hopes that both him and Van de Ven can remain fit this season after missing out on almost half of the games last year due to injury issues.

Spurs have a better chance of winning a game when both defenders are on the pitch. As per Transfermarkt, Romero and Van de Ven have played together 46 times in the last two seasons. And during that time, Spurs have won 26 games in all competitions, losing seven, and drawing 15. This just shows how much of an impact the centre-backs make while donning the Lilywhite jersey.
