The Austin Spurs, the San Antonio Spurs’ G League affiliate, have hired Jacob Chance as their new head coach. Up to this point, Chance has spent his time coaching in the NBL as an assistant for a few different clubs, with Melbourne United being the most recent. Now, the 31-year-old coaching phenom will be taking his talents to Texas.
_"It's something I hadn't thought about a lot before these last 12 months," Chance_ [_told Olgun Uluc of ESPN_](https://www.espn.com/nbl/story/_/id/46014216/austin-spurs-hire-australia-jacob-chance-head-coach)_. “I started to get a bit of interest and have some conversations. I think the challenge of the G-League and what that brings; it's a high-quality league; it's obviously come a long way... in how it's resourced and treated, and the Spurs treat their G-League team with a lot of respect and a lot of resources.”_
Chance will take over Austin in the midst of the Spurs’ push toward contention, meaning he will have the chance to play a very underrated role in the organization.
**How can Jacob Chance help the Spurs?**
----------------------------------------
This summer, the Spurs drafted Ron Harper Jr. with the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. They’ll be adding him to a core that also includes superstar center Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox, and Stephon Castle, among others.
Though Chance will spend the bulk of his time in Austin, he’ll have an opportunity to directly impact the future of the Spurs organization.
With the current state of the CBA, adding quality talent on cheap contracts is as important as ever. Guys like Lu Dort and Sam Hauser helped teams win championships after inking two-way contracts with their teams—and those are just the two most recent examples of title teams.
Chance taking over the G League team is more than just a shot at leading a professional basketball squad. It’s his chance to make a lasting impact on the Spurs. A chance to help develop guys who could be integral pieces of championship-caliber rosters down the line.
Perhaps there’s nobody on the Spurs’ current G League roster who could turn into that. But having Chance at the helm will give them a great starting point, especially based on his track record in Australia.
Guys like Harrison Ingram, Riley Minix, and have all shown enough to earn David Jones-Garcia two-way contracts with the Spurs, so why couldn’t they turn into more? Could Chance help them get there?
The Spurs did more than just hire a new G League head coach. They hired someone who could help them win championships.
