Pittsburgh Steelers cut hard-nosed former Colts running back

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released running back Evan Hull, the team announced on Friday. Hull is the first running back to be released by the team, leaving Lew Nichols and Trey Sermon still on the roster after impressive preseasons.

Hull was the Colts’ fifth-round pick out of Northwestern in the 2023 NFL Draft. He has just one rush attempt in his career for a yard, but the 5-foot-10, 210-pound running back impressed with above-average athleticism.

Hull ran a 4.47 40-yard dash and posted a 37-inch vertical jump. The Colts did not re-sign him following the season and he landed with the Steelers as a future’s contract.

At Northwestern, Hull ran for over 2000 yards while adding 891 receiving yards. He had a chance to compete for a bottom-of-the-roster spot, but was outshined by Nichols and Sermon, who each impressed in their limited action.

Hull will now go through waivers and could return to sign on the practice squad, and is also free to sign elsewhere with another interested team. The Steelers are expected to keep three running backs on their final roster.
