Lewis Koumas: There was lots of interest but no other way about it – I was coming to Birmingham …

Lewis Koumas has said there was “no way” other than joining Birmingham City after hearing about the club’s project, the fans and manager Chris Davies.

19-year-old winger Koumas has become Blues’ tenth signing of the summer after signing a season-long loan deal from Premier League Champions Liverpool – the club he joined at just 11 years of age in 2016.

Tommy Doyle, James Beadle and Eiran Cashin have also arrived at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park this summer on loan from top-flight clubs.

Blues boss Davies has just two out-and-out wingers – Demarai Gray and Keshi Anderson – so he will be delighted to have added to the depth of his attack, but is still believed to be wanting further reinforcements before the transfer deadline on September 1.

The likes of Willum Willumsson, Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Kanya Fujimoto can all do a job on the wing but they are not naturally suited to the role, so Koumas will certainly be a welcome addition to the ever-growing squad.

Koumas – who can play on either flank – netted 17 goals across all levels for Liverpool’s academy during 2023/24 and earned a first call-up to the Wales’ senior team, making his debut in a friendly against Gibraltar before heading out on loan to Stoke City the following season.

He featured 49 times for the Potters while out on loan, helping them to an 18th-placed finish in the second tier.

The youngster uses his dad, Jason, who made 422 senior appearances for an array of clubs – including one of Blues’ Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion – as his biggest motivation and will be keen to follow in his footsteps in the Championship.

“_There was lots of interest,_” Koumas told Blues+ in his first interview after signing on Friday evening. “_But just how big of a club this is, how passionate the fans are, the project that I’ve heard about and after speaking to the gaffer there was no other way about it – I was coming to Birmingham._”
