2024 2nd-round pick could earn a two-way contract with the Knicks

The New York Knicks are in the process of filling out their roster for this upcoming season, and there are a handful of candidates that could fill the team’s two-way spots.

[The Athletic's James L. Edwards III](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6554889/2025/08/18/knicks-roster-2025-rotations-lineup-predictions/) noted a number of the team’s younger talent that could earn a spot, including 2024 second-round pick Kevin McCullar Jr.

“It is my understanding, after talking to several people around the league, that McCullar isn’t eligible for the second-round exception slot on the main roster because he has one year of service,” Edwards wrote. “That spot has to go to someone who hasn’t had an NBA contract, and McCullar played last season on a two-way deal. For McCullar to make the main roster, the Knicks would have to sign him using their veteran minimum slot or make a trade to open up another space. I don’t see the former happening.”

Keeping McCullar Jr. on the roster won’t be an easy task

In essence, the Knicks would need to make room for McCullar Jr. to stick on the roster. If they do so, it’ll show that they have confidence in his development. The former Kansas standout was drafted with the 56th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, and missed a lot of action last season due to a knee injury. In 13 G-League games, he averaged 11.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game.

McCullar Jr. didn’t get much of a chance last season to showcase his skillset, and the team has really only seen him in limited G-League action, and Summer League. Nonetheless, he could still earn a two-way spot on the roster due to his potential, and the Knicks’ questionable wing depth.
