Manchester United are still in active talks to sign Senne Lammens
Manchester United started the Premier League 2025/26 just like they ended last season—disappointingly. United further wore down the patience of their supporters by losing their first match 1-0 to Arsenal at Old Trafford. The team played aggressively in the opening minutes, but Altay Bayindir’s mistake spoiled everything. His lapse in handling a simple corner gave Riccardo Calafiori an easy chance to score.
United then tried to equalise, Benjamin Sesko came on the field, Bryan Mbeumo created two good chances, but David Raya kept Arsenal’s lead. This defeat once again proved that United’s biggest weakness is the goalkeeper position, and the club are now looking for a new shot-stopper this summer. This is why Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens’ name has come to the fore amid the failures of Andre Onana and Bayindir.
Fabrizio Romano’s report and Lammens’ profile
Fabrizio Romano wrote on X that Manchester United are in serious talks to sign Royal Antwerp’s 23-year-old goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, and personal terms have almost been finalised. He indicated that United are working fast on the deal because several clubs in France and Italy also want to sign the player. According to Romano, United have been watching Lammens for months, and the continuous failure of Onana and Bayindir have forced the club to look for a new goalkeeper.
Manchester United are still in active talks to sign Senne Lammens.
United’s current situation is that last season, Onana’s mistakes cost the team many points. Against Arsenal, Amorim kept Bayindir in the starting eleven, but the corner that missed by his hands was the reason for the team’s defeat. In such a situation, Lammens’ name looks like a ray of hope. The Belgian is tall, strong in shot-stopping and shows confidence in catching aerial balls.
However, his biggest weakness is the lack of experience. Lammens has yet to prove himself on a big stage outside Belgium. It’s hard to predict how his nerves will react in high-pressure matches. Still, given his age and qualities, United believe he could fit into Amorim’s plans, but a deal will only be completed if the club sell a few players. Alejandro Garnacho’s move to Chelsea is almost certain, and that could make it easier for United to find a new goalkeeper, as we earlier also reported that the club are looking to accept new offers for Onana. There were even reports stating that the Red Devils want £30m for the Cameroon goalkeeper.
Is Lammens the right choice for United?
The question now is whether Senne Lammens is the solution to United’s goalkeeping problems. His youthful energy and potential look attractive, but given last season’s 15th place and Europa League final loss, many believe the club need an experienced goalkeeper who can provide immediate stability.
If United do indeed take a chance on Lammens, it will be part of Amorim’s strategy of relying on young players. With Garnacho gone and United out of Europe, Lammens’ arrival could either change the spirit of the team or prove to be another risk. The opening defeat against Arsenal have made it clear that there is no room for error. In our opinion, the signing of Lammens could be a sign of future plans, but given the current crisis, United should probably also consider an experienced and instantly reliable goalkeeper. However, then again, we don’t have many other options, and hence our brightest choice would be the Belgian shot-stopper.
