Kickoff Lions-Packers gameday with trip to Lambeau Field aboard Lake Michigan car ferry

LUDINGTON, MI – For Detroit Lions fans, there’s a way to skip the drive around Lake Michigan and start the gameday party early as they head to the season opener in Wisconsin.

The S.S. Badger, a 410-foot car ferry that traverses Lake Michigan, offers a unique way to get to the Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers NFL game on Sunday, Sept. 7, at Lambeau Field.

“This is a great way to travel to Green Bay for the game,” said Thom Hawley, spokesman for the S.S. Badger. “It’s a fun, scenic, and hassle-free start to your weekend, avoiding the long drive and traffic congestion.”

The Badger provides a scenic and stress-free alternative to highway travel, allowing fans to kick off their game day experience with a relaxing and enjoyable journey. The ship offers food, drinks, entertainment, comfortable seating and a chance to stretch your legs.

Game day passengers are encouraged to wear their team colors. The crew will offer special food, drinks and themed activities.

The Badger pushes off from Ludington at 9 a.m. daily. The steamship travels the 60 miles across the Lake Michigan in about four hours, docking in Manitowoc, Wis., at noon (there’s a one-hour time difference). Lambeau Field is a 45-minute drive from Manitowoc; kickoff is scheduled for 4:25 p.m.

The 1953 ship is the last operating coal-fired passenger steamer in the United States. It was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 2016. The Badger originally transported railcars across Lake Michigan.
