EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — With cutdown day looming, an Eagles veteran on the 53-man roster bubble made his mark in Friday’s preseason finale at the New York Jets.
Parry Nickerson, a 30-year-old journeyman cornerback, appeared to be on the outside looking in for a roster spot with the defending Super Bowl champions. But Nickerson might have made Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni’s decision tougher at MetLife Stadium.
In the first quarter of the Eagles’ preseason game against the Jets, Nickerson secured an acrobatic interception. The slot corner jumped an out route by wide receiver Malachi Corley and leapt to pick off Jets rookie quarterback Brady Cook.
Nickerson, after celebrating with teammates in the end zone, returned to a raucous sideline. Saquon Barkley, Reed Blankenship and others hugged and helmet-tapped Nickerson as he basked in a moment he won’t soon forget.
Nickerson is fighting for his place with the Eagles after bouncing around the league. The former Tulane standout was a sixth-round pick by the Jets in 2018, playing a fair amount as a rookie. Since then, he’s spent time with the Seahawks, Jaguars, Packers, Vikings and Dolphins.
Vic Fangio, who coached him in Miami in 2023, brought him to Philadelphia last year. Nickerson was with the team in training camp and spent a bulk of the 2024 season on the practice squad. But he hasn’t played a regular-season snap since October 2023. So it’s been a while.
Nickerson entered the preseason finale on the outside looking in of the 53-man roster, which will be finalized on Tuesday. Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean are locks. Adoree’ Jackson, Jakorian Bennett, Kelee Ringo and Mac McWilliams are also expected to make the team. It’s a numbers game, and there might not be room for Nickerson.
But even if he gets cut by Philadelphia, maybe Nickerson’s interception will go a long way in him landing with another NFL franchise through waivers.
