Manchester United’s ideal Paul Pogba replacement is 21-year-old on Real Madrid’s ‘radar’ - opinion

Manchester United are a team in transition under Ruben Amorim, with the 20-time Premier League champions hoping to return to former glories under the Portuguese manager.

It has been a summer of upheaval at Old Trafford, with United signing Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha over the summer to add firepower to their squad.

However, the Red Devils are seemingly still in the market for more additions, with United keen to sign Carlos Baleba but struggling to get a deal over the line for the Brighton star.

However, with the future of another Premier League star that is reportedly on Real Madrid’s radar unclear, the Manchester club should go all-in to sign him before September 1.

Adam Wharton a perfect addition for United

Spanish newspaper AS has stated Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton has emerged as a potential target for Madrid, with the England international on the La Liga giants’ ‘radar’.

This should be enough of a warning for United to make their move, with the 21-year-old an ideal signing for the Red Devils.

United sent scouts to watch Wharton in Palace’s Premier League opener against Chelsea, as reported by TBR Football, and a new midfielder would considerably boost Amorim’s squad.

Despite other higher-profile Palace stars such as Eberechi Eze gaining the plaudits in recent years, Wharton’s steady hand in the centre of the Eagles team has been a key reason for their overachievement under Oliver Glasner.

The England international’s range of passing, tenacity in the tackle and football intelligence make him an exciting prospect – and a player capable of making a step up to a top European club.

United desperate for a midfield general

United have not had a dominant central midfielder in his prime since Paul Pogba, who when on form made the Red Devils tick and controlled games for the Manchester side.

Manuel Ugarte is underperforming, Casemiro is past his best and the sale of Scott McTominay to Napoli is increasingly looking like a mistake by the United hierarchy.

With Kobbie Mainoo also seemingly frozen out by Amorim, a capable new addition appears to be a prerequisite before the close of the transfer window.

Palace would clearly be reluctant to sell Wharton, especially as some of their other main players appear to be heading towards the exit door, but a big offer from United could well turn the player’s head.
