Aston Villa have the chance to sign some more players before the end of the transfer window

Aston Villa are back in Premier League action this weekend with an away trip to Brentford. They drew 0-0 with Newcastle United at home in their first game. Defender Ezri Konsa was sent off for them against the Magpies.

Unai Emery has the chance to sign some more players before the end of the transfer window. He also has the opportunity to let some players head out the exit door as well if needed to free up space and funds. The deadline is on Monday 1st September at a slightly earlier time than usual at 7pm.

Aston Villa eye Geny Catamo move

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Aston Villa are keen on Sporting Lisbon attacker Geny Catamo but face ‘strong’ competition from Fenerbahce. The Mozambique international, who has 33 caps to his name, is being linked with a switch to Villa Park. His future in Portugal is up in the air at the moment amid attention from elsewhere.

Catamo, 24, is a winger who has been with his current club since joining them back in 2019. Prior to his move, he played for Amora as a teenager. He has made 92 appearances since his switch to Lisbon and has scored 13 goals, seven of which came last season. He has also been loaned out to the likes of Vitoria and Maritimo over recent times to get some experience under his belt and boost his development.

Aston Villa could see him as someone to boost their attacking department. If he joined, he would give them more competition and depth at the top end of the pitch. He would also give Emery something different to call upon in games.

Fenerbahce are also being mentioned as potential suitors though. They finished 2nd in the Turkish Super Lig in the last campaign behind rivals Galatasaray. The Istanbul giants are still managed by Jose Mourinho.

What now for Aston Villa?

Aston Villa head to Brentford in search of their first victory of this term. Their upcoming opponents lost Thomas Frank to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this summer. He has since been replaced by Keith Andrews.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Emery has said: “Always, is very difficult, Brentford. Very, very difficult. We respect them a lot. Of course, they changed their coach after a long time with the same coach, but the coach is now trying now to follow the same work they did.

“They have some new players, and they have some players very important for them, they left, but my expectation for tomorrow is to play a tough match. We have to respect them. Playing away, always my experiences are being difficult in all the teams we are facing, and tomorrow, respecting them, we are going to try to get our best.”

He added: “We are keeping clean sheets, fantastic. This is really the first step forward we will do tomorrow, and then, of course, we will need more to win the match. This is our objective. Last year, we struggled (in) a lot of moments during the season, not being defensively strong, and this is the first, what we have to do.”
