Liverpool’s summer business has been busy with new arrivals, but it’s the exits that continue to raise eyebrows.
The latest involves forward Lewis Koumas, who has left Anfield for a season-long loan move to Birmingham City.
The 19-year-old had been part of Arne Slot’s preseason squad but found himself pushed back into the U21’s once the campaign began.
That apparent signal from the club made clear that another loan was the best route for his development.
With interest from several clubs, including Norwich, Wrexham, and even Sevilla, Koumas chose Birmingham — and for one key reason: the manager wanted him.
Speaking after the deal, the Wales international said: “There was lots of interest but just how big of a club this is, how passionate the fans are, the project that I’ve heard about and after speaking to the gaffer, there was no other way about it – I was coming to Birmingham.”
For Koumas, it’s not just about game time. It’s about trust. And at this stage of his career, a manager’s faith can be worth more than any signing-on bonus.

Who is Lewis Koumas?
Koumas joined Liverpool’s academy at age 11 after starting out at Tranmere Rovers. He signed his first professional deal in 2023 and made his senior debut in February 2024, scoring against Southampton in the FA Cup.
He also featured in the squad that lifted the Carabao Cup at Wembley days earlier.
Last season, Koumas impressed at Stoke City, playing 49 times and scoring six goals. He showed promise, even grabbing a brace in the FA Cup against Cardiff City. His steady rise also earned him a senior cap for Wales earlier this year.
Now, the forward moves to Birmingham with promotion hopes on the line. Liverpool reportedly sees the loan as a stepping stone, with plans to reassess his future next summer.
If all goes well, Anfield could welcome back a player who has sharpened his skills in the Championship — and perhaps learned how to be more than just a cup cameo.
