Lucas Paqueta scored a wonder goal as West Ham lost 5-1 against Chelsea at the London Stadium on Friday night.

The Hammers may have been defeated by their London rivals, but it was a game worth remembering for Paqueta, given his strike in the sixth minute.

The Brazilian has been linked with a West Ham exit this summer, especially after he was cleared of spot-fixing charges.

Newcastle are believed to be keen on Paqueta and they can also offer him Champions League football.

Early in the first half of the game, Paqueta received the ball ahead of the halfway line and found himself in acres of space.

He carried the ball forward and, before any Chelsea player could close him down, fired a powerful shot on goal with his left foot.

The Brazil international struck the ball perfectly and despite Robert Sanchez’s best efforts to save the shot, he could not prevent it from going into the back of the net.

After scoring, the midfielder ran towards the home fans, pointed to the Hammers badge and kissed it before he celebrated with his teammates.

Paqueta promised the West Ham fans that they were in for a “great” season ahead after a 3-0 loss to Sunderland, which also reaffirmed his commitment to the East London side.

Fans will want new signings soon

The Hammers fans surely will be thrilled that Paqueta seems to be staying, as his flair, vision and midfield dynamism are vital to the team’s aspirations.

His retention provides stability and quality, boosting morale after a turbulent transfer window.

However, football is not a one-man show, and while Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen, who consistently delivers goals and moments of brilliance, are exceptional, the squad lacks depth in game-changing talent.

Beyond these two, West Ham’s attacking options and creative spark are limited, which could hinder their push for European spots or domestic success.

To compete consistently, they must sign players capable of turning matches.

A dynamic winger or clinical striker and potentially a versatile playmaker are imperative before the transfer deadline.

Without reinforcements, the reliance on Paqueta and Bowen risks burnout or exposure against stronger sides.
