Alvarez departs

Saturday, 23rd August 2025

Mexico captain Edson Alvarez has completed a season-long loan move to Turkish side Fenerbahçe SK.

And the 27-year-old, who is under contract at West Ham until the summer of 2028 has an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

West Ham paid £35million to sign Alvarez from Dutch club Ajax in August 2023, but he made just 73 appearances for the club - which equates to roughly £480,000 per appearance.

The fourth Mexican to represent West Ham after Guillermo Franco, Pablo Barrera and Javier Hernandez, Alvarez made just 13 appearances under Graham Potter, who deemed the number four as surplus to requirements.

He was West Ham's sixth-highest expensive signing in the club's history behind Jean-Clair Todibo, Lucas Paqueta, Mo Kudus, Max Kilman and Sebastien Haller.

Alvarez's departure, just two years into his five-year contract represents yet another catastrophic failure for the club's disjointed recruitment policy.

He is the second of four players purchased with the windfall received from Arsenal for Declan Rice to have left the club, following the sale of Kudus to Tottenham; now only James Ward-Prowse and Konstantinos Mavropanos remain.
