Man Utd's new keeper target scored past Real Madrid and makes feelings clear about move

After months of speculation, Manchester United appear to have settled on their top goalkeeper target: Senne Lammens. The Red Devils are pushing to strike a deal worth £17million with Royal Antwerp to acquire the services of the 23-year-old, with personal terms already agreed with the shot-stopper.

The arrival of Lammens is sure to spark some changes in the goalkeeper department at Old Trafford, with Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir both facing uncertain futures at the club. However, Ruben Amorim will be pleased with the acquisition if an agreement can be reached in the final week of the transfer window.

Lammens is regarded as one of the brightest talents in Belgium and would be expected to push for the No. 1 spot upon his at the Theatre of Dreams. Express Sport takes a look at what to know about the goalkeeper…

Late Real Madrid goal

It isn’t just Lammens’ goalkeeping ability that has earned him plaudits in years gone by. In 2019, the youngster scored a 95th minute equaliser for Club Brugge in their UEFA Youth League clash with Real Madrid. Lammens rose highest to steer his header beyond now-Eibar goalkeeper Luis Lopez before setting off towards the substitutes bench to celebrate with his teammates.

Addresses United speculation

Earlier this summer, Lammens spoke out on the prospect of joining United in an interview with Belgian newspaper Gazet van Antwerpen, hinting that he would be open to joining the club – as well as rival outfits – if an appropriate offer arrived. He said: “Manchester United are one of the best clubs, yes. But you never know. It could also be a different club or, who knows, I might stay here. In any case, I try to keep my feet on the ground. When teams like that come along, I think you’ve earned it.”

Collapsed Leeds move

Lammens may have already been a Premier League goalkeeper if his move to Leeds United did not collapse in 2023. According to Het Laatste Nieuws, Lammens was set to join the Red Devils’ fierce rivals on a free transfer from Club Brugge, but talks were ongoing over whether it would happen in that January window or in the following summer when his contract had expired with the Belgian outfit. However, it was Royal Antwerp who pounced to sign the goalkeeper as a free agent, with Leeds signing Karl Darlow that window.
