Most Newcastle United fans WOULD accept Alexander Isak back into the Magpies' starting line up . . . but only if he publicly apologises for his recent actions.

The Swedish striker ended last season as one of the heroes of St James' Park, having helped the club win their first domestic silverware in 70 years and qualify for the Champions League for the second time in three seasons.

Isak was a Wembley goalscorer in the 2-1 win over Liverpool in March, and his 27 goals in all competitions ensured his place in the hearts of the Geordie nation.

However all that changed this summer when he didn't travel to Singapore and South Korea for the club's pre-season trip, prefering instead to train with former club Real Sociedad in Spain.

It then emerged that he did not intend to play for the club again amid transfer interest from Liverpool, with the Anfield side seeing a bid of around £110m turned down.

Isak has spoken about promises being broken, something which Newcastle were quick to deny, but the bottom line is he is not available to Eddie Howe - and United are now desperately trying to identify striker transfer targets before deadline day.

It has led to accusations that Isak has let the club, his team-mates and the fans down, and while Howe insists he would welcome him back into his squad should he have a change of heart, it's less certain what the reaction of the supporters would be.

However, in our recent poll, thousands of fans expressed their verdict to the question: Could you ever welcome Isak back to the Newcastle squad, with some interesting results.

Of the three options, 14 per cent said he was too good to freeze out and should be welcomed back, while 45 per cent would take him back - but only if he makes a public apology first.

A large slice of those who answered the question felt there was no way back, however, with 41 per cent feeling the damage is permament.

Newcastle remain adamant that he is not for sale, and that any deal would only be considered should an appropriate offer arrive AND United were able to sign replacement forwards.

Liverpool are yet to return with a second bid, although they has been talk of a £130m offer in the pipeline, while Newcastle continue to pursue a series of targets, with a bid of £40m for Yoane Wissa turned down this week.
