Mixed Media Collage Class: Come try out a new hobby at the Detroit Lakes Public Library, 1000 Washington Ave., from 3-6 p.m. Artist Cally Nundahl will lead this free class on the art of mixed media, where participants will create a beautiful canvas art piece, using a variety of materials. Cyanotype Workshop: Come learn how to make cyanotype prints on paper at this 10 a.m. class in the Holmes Art Cellar, 806 Washington Ave. (basement of the Holmes Theatre), Detroit Lakes. Cyanotype is an old form of photography printing that involves a light-sensitive mixture that changes with exposure to sunlight (i.e., ultraviolet light). Boats and Bars 19: The Lakes Area Parrot Heads will host their 19th annual "Boats, Bars and Cars" fundraiser in Detroit Lakes, with ticket sales opening at 10 a.m. in front of Zorbaz in Detroit Lakes, and live music at local bars including Zorbaz, Lakeside Tavern, Long Bridge, Holiday Inn Beach Bar and Hub 41 (see live music schedule below) starting at 11 a.m., plus Island Time playing on the Sandbar Stage between Big and Little Detroit Lake (accessible by boat only) from 1-4 p.m.

Ole's Ride for Hospice: The 16th Annual Ole's Ride for Hospice will begin and end at Billy's Corner Bar in Vergas, with registration opening at 10 a.m. and kickstands up at noon. Cost to participate is $25 per bike, plus $15 for an additional rider. Registration includes a t-shirt, meal, door prizes, a silent auction and live music from the Fat Cats at the ride's conclusion. Arrow Fest on Detroit Mountain: The Sandhills Archery Club and Scheels will co-host Arrow Fest, a full-day 3D archery shoot on Detroit Mountain, starting at 8 a.m., with two courses, novelty shoots and more. Charitable Pint Night-Broken Strings Guitar Club: This month's Charitable Pint Night at Bucks Mill Brewing will feature the Broken Strings Guitar Club, a local nonprofit that aims to spread the joy of music by donating guitars to aspiring area musicians. From 5-8 p.m., come in and learn more about the club and its mission, while enjoying a pint of one of Bucks Mill's original brews (alcoholic and non-alcoholic options available). A portion of the proceeds from each pint sold will be donated to the Broken Strings Guitar Club. There will also be live music from aspiring local artists, as Bucks Mill hosts its first-ever open mic night.

Heartland Trail Routing Study Open House: Becker County and its partners in the Heartland Trail Rerouting Study will host an open house at the Detroit Lakes Pavilion, 1361 Washington Ave., from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Come learn more about this collaborative project to determine the best possible route for a new segment of the Heartland Trail from Dunton Locks to Bucks Mill. This project is focused on developing a trail route that considers the needs of bikers, walkers and snowmobilers. Wannigan Park Ikes Meeting: The Prairie Woods Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America will meet at the covered bridge in Wannigan Park, 200 N. There will also be some craft activities. In case of rain, all activities will be moved inside the library. This event is intended for children between birth-6 years of age and their parents, though all are welcome to join in the fun.

Pollinator Garden Opening Celebration: The Boys and Girls Club of Detroit Lakes will host a grand opening celebration for its new Pollinator Garden at 150 Richwood Road from 4:30-6:30 p.m. There will be a short program at 4:45 p.m., plus free root beer floats, kids' activities and door prizes, and tours of the club are also available upon request. All are welcome.

Trucks and Tunes-Summer Send Off: The Historic Holmes Theatre, Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce and Project 412 will host the final Trucks and Tunes concert of the summer at the Detroit Lakes City Park Bandshell. This "Summer Send Off" concert, which features the Six One Five Collective, will include a variety of food trucks and vendor booths selling their wares from 5-8 p.m., with the music starting at 6 p.m. All are welcome to enjoy the concert free of charge; bring chairs and blankets for comfortable seating.

Tamarac Sunset Kayak Tour: Join Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge park rangers at the Pine Lake access off County Road 29 for a sunset kayak tour starting at 7 p.m. Please bring your own canoe or kayak, and life jackets (required) for all who will be on board. Antique Motorcycle Showcase: Detroit Lakes' West Lake Drive will be temporarily closed to through traffic between Summit and Lake avenues from 5-7 p.m. for an "Engines of the Past" antique motorcycle showcase, hosted by the Roosevelt chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America. About 40-50 motorcycles are anticipated to be on display. Open to the public.

Multi-day and Recurring Events

Superhero Academy: The Becker County Museum at 714 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes, will host a "Superhero Academy" from Monday, Aug. 25 through Thursday, Aug. 28, 9 a.m.-noon each day. This event, intended for kids between the ages of 4-8, will include superhero-themed art and STEM projects, along with experiments to discover the science behind superpowers like flight, strength, and speed. Campers will design their own unique superhero, complete with strengths, weaknesses, and a mission to help others. Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion: The 2024 Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion will take place from Friday through Monday, Aug. 29-Sept. 1 at the WMSTR grounds in Rollag, Minnesota. Once you pay the $15 daily admission fee (children age 14 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult), you can enjoy a full day of steam engines, parades, live music, crafts, blacksmithing and threshing demonstrations and hundreds of other exhibits at no additional cost. Ogema Days: The northwest Becker County community of Ogema will host its annual community festival from Wednesday through Saturday, Aug. 27-30, with a "Margaritaville" theme. Charley Harper "Colors and Shapes" Exhibition: Come view the traveling exhibit, "Colors and Shapes — Nature as Seen by Charley Harper," from now through Sept. 15. The exhibit from the Museum de Toulouse is on display in three different Detroit Lakes locations, at Ortenstone Gardens and Sculpture Park, the Washington Square Mall and the Becker County Museum. Plant, Pest and Gardening Clinics: To help answer your questions about trees, shrubs, home gardens and lawns, the Becker County Master Gardeners will host a free plant, pest and gardening clinic every Wednesday through Sept. 24, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Extension office, 1120 8th St. SE, Detroit Lakes. There is no charge for a consultation, though participants are asked to bring samples for easier identification of plants, insects and diseases. Hornet Pride Picnics: Come show your Hornet Pride at United Community Bank's Hornet Pride Picnics, every Friday of the summer, with volunteers serving up a hot dog lunch (with chips) on Main Avenue from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Free will donations will go to support Frazee-Vergas athletics and arts programming.

Pressure Canner Gauge Testing: The University of Minnesota Extension Service in Becker County is equipped to test pressure canner dial gauges for home canners, using a pump dial gauge-testing unit. This unit uses air rather than steam pressure to test pressure canner gauges. Please call Linda Perrine, Extension Office Manager at 218-846-7328 to make an appointment to have your gauge tested free of charge. The Extension Office is located at 1120 8th St. SE, Detroit Lakes. Dunton Locks Boat Tram: The Dunton Locks Boat Tram between Sallie and Muskrat lakes will be open every Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. until dusk through Labor Day, Sept. 1. Daily ($25) and seasonal ($125) passes may be purchased at the tram site (cash or check only; no cards) as well as the Becker County Courthouse in Detroit Lakes.

Shady Hollow Flea Market: The Shady Hollow Flea Market, located south of Detroit Lakes, will be open every Saturday and Sunday through August (plus Labor Day), as well as on Saturdays through the end of September, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. (gates open at 6 a.m. for vendors and early-bird pickers). Wednesday Night Barrels: Double S Arena in Detroit Lakes will host barrel racing every Wednesday night this summer, starting May 28. Exhibitions start at 5:30 p.m. and end promptly at 6:45; jackpot racing starts at 7 p.m. with the Peewees, followed by Open 4D and Youth 3D, then one more round of each. Lakes Area Farmers Market: The Lakes Area Farmers Market will be open every Tuesday and Saturday this summer in Detroit Lakes' Peoples Park (just north of Zorbaz), from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. each day. Besides fresh produce, local vendors will be offering fresh-baked bread and handcrafted candies, specialty lemonades and more. Tinker Tots: Parents with kids between the ages of 1-5 are invited to bring them to the Becker County Museum, 714 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. every Thursday for a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math)-themed activity designed just for them. Though there is no cost for the event, regular museum admission applies (free for museum members; $10 adults, $5 kids age 1 and up for nonmembers).

Cribbage Players Wanted: The Richville Community Center will host open cribbage play on Thursdays from 1-3 p.m. Both new and experienced players are welcome. Can play two-hand, three-hand and four-hand. Cost is $2 per person; there will be prize money. The community center is located at 100 Grove St. SW in Richville. Grace Cafe: Grace Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes will be serving lunch every Wednesday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Menu varies from week to week. The lunch is open to all in the Detroit Lakes area; admission is a free-will donation.

Grace Food Pantry: Grace Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes will be operating a food pantry during its regular office hours, 9 a.m.- noon, Monday through Friday. Anyone in need can come in and pick up some food. Donations will also be accepted.

Coffee Club: David-Donehower Funeral Home hosts a monthly Coffee Club in the community room at the Detroit Lakes Police Department (106 E. Holmes St.) on the third Tuesday of every month, starting at 10 a.m. Learn how intentional planning of your final wishes and setting funds aside today, will protect your loved ones in the future. Anna Schmitz from Edward Jones will also lead a relaxed, informal discussion on current events, the economy and investing. Plus, the coffee's on us! Free and open to the public.

GED/Adult Diploma Instruction: If one of your “life happens” moments resulted in not finishing high school, Lakes Area Adult Education is ready to help you complete that process with a GED or an Adult Diploma. Driver's License Written Exam Prep: Lakes Area Adult Education offers virtual classes for Minnesota Driver's License written exam preparation every fall and spring. These classes help unlicensed adult drivers to become familiar with vocabulary, signs, and rules of the road that will assist them in passing the written portion of the MN Driver’s License Exam. Heart O'Lakes Harmony: The Heart O'Lakes Harmony men's barbershop-style a cappella choral group is looking for new members. Many struggle with alcoholism, divorce, sexual abuse, codependency, domestic violence, drug addiction, food and gambling addictions.
