'Top player': Darren Bent says Liverpool are trying to sign a 'brilliant' player before transfer deadline day

Liverpool have been rather busy throughout the 2025-26 summer transfer window.

Even though the Anfield outfit were one of the most dominant teams in the Premier League last season, there were clearly some areas that Arne Slot thought needed bolstering.

And, since the Reds have now spent over £250million on improving their ranks, failing to retain the top-flight title and getting deep into the Champions League is not an option.

Although several changes have already been made to Liverpool’s first-team squad, with there still being some time for deals to be struck, it doesn’t feel likely that Slot and Richard Hughes are done with the transfer market yet.

Darren Bent is surprised that more teams aren’t going after Marc Guehi

Over the last couple of weeks, Marc Guehi has been consistently linked with an exit from Selhurst Park.

The defender has a year left on his current deal, and even though Liverpool could get him for free at the end of the season, a move for the Englishman now feels like it makes sense.

However, seeing as though Crystal Palace barely have enough depth among their ranks as it is, they’re sticking to their £40million price tag.

One thing that has left Darren Bent confused about the transfer saga, however, is that no other clubs seem to be going for him.

“He is a top, top player, the captain, Marc Guehi, I think he’s brilliant, I’m surprised more teams aren’t in for him,” he said while live on talkSPORT.

“But then, it doesn’t surprise me that one of the best teams about, Liverpool, are after him.

“Unfortunately for Crystal Palace, because they’re not competing for Premier League titles and Champions League spots and stuff, they’re almost like that team that’s just in between.

“Unfortunately, players are going to use that as a stepping stone.”

Liverpool must sign Marc Guehi before the window slams shut

Even though Giovanni Leoni has just been brought in to help bolster Liverpool’s defensive ranks, it still feels like the Reds are a defender short.

Indeed, they now have four senior centre-backs among their ranks, but with the performance that Ibrahima Konate put in against Bournemouth last Friday, it feels like more competition is needed.

Of course, Joe Gomez is also among Liverpool’s ranks, but his injury history leaves a lot to be desired and means he can’t be regularly relied upon.

Guehi would be an excellent addition to the Anfield outfit’s ranks, as, with the amount of Premier League experience he has, alongside the fact that he’s still just 24 years old, it feels like a no-brainer.

Much like Guehi, Konate’s contract is also set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 campaign and with no renewal in sight, a replacement will need to be sourced.

At the end of the day, a potential transfer will mostly rely upon whether the Reds want to fork out over £35million for a player who they could get for free in a year.

But if they want the best chance of retaining the Premier League title and perhaps winning the Champions League, Guehi would be a step closer to that goal.
