The latest transfer news as West Brom swoop for a former Leeds United and Rangers player.
West Bromwich Albion have reportedly made an enquiry to sign Stade Rennais midfielder Glen Kamara but face competition from two clubs.
The Baggies are eager to bolster their midfield options further after the loan acquisition of Manchester United hot prospect Toby Collyer. Liverpool’s James McConnell has been linked for a potential move - also on loan - but Albion appear to have cast their net far and wide.
Kamara, who joined Leeds United from Rangers in 2023 for around £5.5 million, has spent the past year or so contracted to Rennes. The 29-year-old has only played 13 league matches for the French club, however, as he went to Al-Shabab on loan for the second half of last season.
The Finland international’s career could be about to continue along its turbulent path as yet another transfer could soon be in the offing. Despite only joining Rennes 13 months ago for a reported €10 million (£8.7m), Kamara is reportedly being allowed to leave.
West Brom ‘make approach’ for midfielder
According to French publication L’Equipe, Albion are targeting Kamara and have made ‘an approach’ to Rennes to discover his availability – and what fee they might demand. The report states West Brom, Bologna and FC Copenhagen are in a three-horse race to sign Kamara, so there’s plenty of competition.
It’s claimed the trio are all keen on signing the midfielder on loan initially, with an option to buy clause included in the deal. It awaits to be seen how open Rennes would be to letting Kamara go, but if the loan to Al-Shabab is anything to go by, it’s likely they would at least be willing to discuss the possibility.
How would Glen Kamara fit in at West Brom?
The report suggests Bologna are leading the race to sign Kamara, but if he ends up at The Hawthorns instead, he would offer head coach Ryan Mason the opportunity to switch things up in midfield. As it stands, Mason has the feisty and technical balance with the Jayson Molumby and Alex Mowatt pairing. If Kamara were to play instead, there would be a bit more physicality thrown into the mix. Kamara could arguably operate in a similar way to Ousmane Diakite; a strong and boisterous presence off the bench.
Collyer, the very exciting loan addition from Man Utd, also needs to be considered. Mason could perhaps swap Collyer in for one of Mowatt or Molumby and then pair him with Kamara. The options certainly wouldn’t be limited, let’s put it that way.
Turning 30 in October, Kamara played 37 times for Leeds in the Championship throughout 2023/24, before featuring in all three play-off fixtures. For Rangers, the club he enjoyed the longest stay of his career so far, Kamara played 193 times and scored nine goals. The Finn also turned out for Arsenal’s senior team once, as he graduated from the Gunners’ academy around a decade ago.
