The San Francisco 49ers have one more preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday before the regular season.
These three players need to perform well otherwise they will swiftly be cut as rosters get trimmed.
The Niners need to whittle things down to their 53-man roster soon. There are some important things to sort out before then, but these three players will have a lot to play for.
WR Isaiah Hodgins
With the 49ers still having a lot of question marks surrounding their wide receivers, the competition for the last few spots should be pretty fierce. That is why the final preseason game could have a lot of implications.
San Jose native Isaiah Hodgins has a chance to factor into the equation, but he will need to have a big game with other veterans ahead of him on the depth chart.
Hodgins had two receptions for 21 yards in last Saturday's contest against the Las Vegas Raiders. However, with Robbie Chosen having a big game, that means Hodgins is going to have to impress if he wants to avoid being cut.
TE Brayden Willis
It seemed like the final tight end spot on the roster could come down to two players with ties to Northern California, but Ross Dwelley got cut.
San Francisco has carried four tight ends in the past, but if the team decides to just carry three, then that final spot could come down to Jake Tonges and Brayden Willis. Tonges outperformed Willis in the first preseason game and the two had comparable stats in the second game, so Willis could have some ground to make up.
Otherwise he may be on the chopping block.
CB Darrell Luter Jr.
Cornerback has been an interesting position to watch with the emergence of rookie Upton Stout in training camp, as well as Chase Lucas' huge preseason. Dallis Flowers is another name who has impressed thus far.
Those developments mean that former third-round pick Darrell Luter Jr. needs to do something special in the final preseason game to earn a spot on the team. He may need an interception or several pass breakups to prove to San Francisco he is deserving of a spot.
It is not too late for these players to earn a spot on the 53-man roster, but it may have to take something special for them in the final preseason game to make a big last impression and show the coaching staff they belong.
